iPad - Losing Ground | freeiosdownloads

The iPad will give up market share while overall tablet shipments continue to surge, according to Citi Research.

The iPad will lose market share to rivals, even as Apple launches the iPad 5 and an update to the iPad Mini in the second half of the year, according to comments today from Citi Research.

In a note to investors on Wednesday titled "iPhone Impresses but Questions Persist," Citi analyst Glen Yeung said the iPad is "losing ground fast."

Reported iPad shipments were down year-to-year "in stark contrast to overall industry tablet growth," which is up sharply, Yeung said.

Apple reported 14.6 million iPads were sold during the company's third quarter, down from last year, when Apple sold 17 million iPads.

And prospects for the upcoming quarter are not particularly positive. "In light of Apple's flattish revenue guidance...we note that [year-to-year] iPad units will decline -7%," Yeung wrote.

The analyst also offered up this scenario for the quarter ending in December: even if Apple were to grow shipments in that quarter by 75 percent, "this implies 6% growth y/y in [calendar year 2013], well below industry growth of 58.7% (according to IDC)."

Citi reiterated that it expects an iPad 5 and new iPad Mini in the coming months. "We continue to expect iPad5 and a low-cost iPad Mini to be launched in 2H13 [second half 2013]," Yeung added.

Citi Research made no mention of an iPad Mini Retina. This is consistent with past comments by Citi claiming that Mini Retina will be delayed.

Apple tells Chinese to only use official chargers | freeiosdownloads

The company posts the guidance on its Chinese site after a woman was allegedly electrocuted while answering a call on her iPhone as it was charging.

Apple has a warning for Chinese customers: don't use the fake stuff.

screenshot ApplePower

Apple has posted the warning on its Chinese Web site, urging customers to only use its official chargers with any of its products. To help its customers with that, Apple showed them how to identify a real charger from the company, as opposed to a fake alternative.

The posting comes after a Chinese woman was allegedly electrocuted while answering her iPhone as it was charging. Apple expressed sadness over her death and promised to fully investigate the matter. Although the company has yet to issue a specific follow-up statement, Apple's warning that customers should use only legitimate chargers might be telling.

Last week, reports surfaced in China that suggested the woman, Ma Ailun, might have been using a third-party charger designed to look like the real thing. Although third-party chargers are not uncommon, they vary widely in terms of safety and quality.

Earlier this year, safety consulting and certification company UL issued a warning that counterfeit Apple USB chargers were making the rounds and that consumers should be on the lookout for them due to their lower quality and possibly dangerous defects.

#Apple seeks patent to beef up mobile-device battery life | freeiosdownloads

A newly published patent application describes how your mobile device can chew up less battery power depending on your habits, location, and other factors.

screenshot Apple seeks patent

Those of us craving better battery life from our mobile devices could see help from an Apple invention outlined in a patent application.

Published Thursday by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the patent dubbed "Power management for electronic devices" suggests key ways to save or reduce the power consumed by your phone or tablet.

Your mobile device could monitor its own activity throughout the day to determine when and for how long you charge it, how far you travel for your commute, and if and when you're able to charge it throughout the day. As such, it could then reserve battery power by automatically turning off or decreasing certain functions, such as regular e-mail fetching or the brightness of the display.

The activity would be stored as a power management scheme that could then be used on a regular basis. The goal is to make sure your current battery charge lasts until you can recharge your device.

Such an invention would be of the greatest benefit to mobile phones, but Apple lists other devices, such as a laptopgaming device, and digital music player.

The power management scheme outlined in the patent application could also adjust itself on the fly depending on your proximity to a charging station or as your power consumption changes. Multiple schemes could also be stored on the device.

Battery life has always been one of the major complaints of mobile users, especially those who travel frequently. It's not unusual to fully charge your device in the morning, use it heavily throughout the day, and then see it totally depleted before the day is over. This is one patent application that Apple needs to turn into reality.

Apple's iPhone activation experience servers downtime | freeiosdownloads

iPhone users reported being unable to activate their new iPhones due to issues with Apple's activation servers on Thursday.

screenshot Apple's iPhone activation

Apple's iPhone activation process experienced hiccups Thursday, with users reportedly unable to activate their new phones.

The check-in process phones home to Apple before users are able to use the device, leaving new buyers out of luck. The security measure has been a source of frustration during previous product launches, when the servers were swamped with new owners.

Apple declined comment on the apparent downtime, which was reported earlier Thursday by MacRumors.

The issues came as Apple's developer site and most of its connected services near a full week of unavailability. Apple temporarily closed the site down last Thursday following what it says was an attack by an intruder. This Thursday's connectivity issues are believed to be unrelated.

Phishing piggybacks scam on Dev Apple Center hack | freeiosdownloads

With people no doubt on edge after the hacking of Apple's Web site for developers, scammers are sending out bogus e-mails in an apparent effort to steal passwords.

screenshot Phishing scam piggybacks

The recent attack against Apple's Web site for developers has prompted a flood of phishing e-mails asking people to change their passwords.

Users have taken to Twitter to warn others of the attacks. But as convincing as the e-mail might be at a glance, grammar mistakes, a missing capital letter in "Apple," and a fake Apple domain for the Web site the e-mail points to mark the message and the site as bogus.

Still, scammers often use emotional responses to a recent event to induce panic in users -- which may make them less likely to double-check a domain or other details before frantically inputting their log-in details.

screenshot Phishing scam piggybacks

Phishing attacks are a relatively simple way to steal data. Users open an e-mail they believe to be legitimate and can then be duped into heading to a Web site and revealing sensitive information such as passwords or credit card numbers.

Such sites may also install malware on a victim's machine.

Phishing campaigns have advanced from the days of terribly written English and laughable stories about millions waiting to be had in a foreign country.

Now some scammers take pains to make sure an e-mail looks legitimate, from including company logos to adding fine print -- copyright information, legal disclaimers, and the like. Once they open an e-mail, users are often directed to legitimate-looking Web sites set up to store the credentials they input. It's best to be skeptical of e-mails from companies that request potentially sensitive information or ask you to click a link.

The original reason Apple's developer portal was taken offline may not have been malicious, but it has opened the floodgates for those with unsavory intentions.

Apple's Developer Center went down this month for "maintenance for an extended period," leading users to wonder whether the iPad and iPhone maker's Web site had suffered a security breach. Apple later admitted that "an intruder attempted to secure personal information of our registered developers from [the] developer Web site."

Ibrahim Balic, a London-based researcher, then took to Twitter to claim responsibility for the issues, stating that his intentions were not malicious, and the the tech giant had been informed of a total of 13 flaws. To prove his claims, Balic posted a YouTube video explaining the process, which was later removed. However, you can still view an embedded version here.

The home page is now accessible, but the members-only area remains closed. Apple is currently working to make sure every security vulnerability is removed, and the current status can be checked here.

Security firm Kaspersky Lab said this week that Apple-related phishing scams have skyrocketed in the last six months, with scammers focused on stealing log-in credentials and financial data.

This story appeared in a different form as "Apple hack exploited with new phishing campaign" on ZDNet.

Apple downtime leaves developers in limbo | freeiosdownloads

Most of Apple's developer services have been unavailable for a week, leaving some app makers in a lurch.

screenshot Apple downtime leaves some developers in limbo

Developer Max Wheeler had to pry his old iPhone 4 from the clutches of his 11-year old son. Why? Not because his kid was misbehaving, but because one of his employees needed it to test an upcoming iOS app, and Apple's developer site was in the midst of what's turned into a weeklong outage.

That phone, which Wheeler had retired in favor of Apple's latest model, was already provisioned to run test versions of software using the company's security certificate -- something that could not be done on a new device with Apple's services down.

"I'm taking toys out of my kid's hands so I can have something to go and do development work," said Wheeler, whose company, Alminder, makes an app that augments Apple's built-in calendar software. "Otherwise, we're dead in the water. We just can't afford it."

"Now the developer is getting all the iMessages from my son's friends," he added.

Wheeler, and an untold number of other app developers, are in crunch mode, trying to get software out the door and into the hands of users. That's become increasingly difficult with Apple's developer tools down while the company reworks its security measures.

Apple took down its developer site and more than a dozen connected services last week following the discovery of a security intrusion that may have resulted in unauthorized access to some developer information. The company has still not detailed the full scope of that intrusion, which it says took place last Thursday, nor has it said who is responsible. However the company has said the developer site was "not associated with any customer information," and that customer information is "securely encrypted."

Apple did not respond to requests for comment on this story, or a request for an update on the developer site.

screenshot Apple downtime leaves some developers in limbo

While Apple continues to work on bringing the developers site back online piece by piece, it's left developers like Wheeler unable to add new devices to test it out on that weren't already authorized before Apple's site went down. It's also left them unable to show off prerelease versions of the software for press -- part of the process Wheeler says could be critical to its success.

Testing apps is a business for companies like TestFlight and HockeyApp, two companies that help developers distribute early versions of their software to users, as well as solicit feedback. TestFlight declined to speak about Apple's downtime, but HockeyApp recently told The Wall Street Journal that the outage had "partly affected business." The company sells plans ranging from $10 to $300 a month, and has services not just for iOS but also for Mac OS X and for Google's Android.

The situation is decidedly less of an issue for companies that have already launched software, and that update less frequently, developers told CNET.

"This has little to no impact on us," says Greg Tseng, the CEO and co-founder of social network Tagged. The company's last big app push was Swoon, a local matchmaking app it launched back in May, and Tseng said the company was not currently in a stage of development where this could be a problem, but he called the current stretch of Apple's downtime "on the long side."

The outage is hurting developers in other ways, too. Also down are the forums where developers discuss unreleased versions of Apple's mobile and desktop software, the downloads for said unreleased software, and pages of documentation. The only service that's gone back up since last week is Apple's bug reporting tool.
screenshot Apple downtime leaves some developers in limbo

Apple has not yet said exactly when its services for developers will come back to life. Thursday afternoon the company launched a special status page that shows which services are up and running, and which are down. Apple also told developers that it would be restoring certain services before others, across three stages.

The ultimate question is whether any of this has soured developers on publishing to Apple's platform, something Wheeler brushed off.

"With a certain amount of development effort you can get your app to work on all (Apple) phones," he said. "Now the question is whether iOS maintains its lead for us, or do we leave for Android instead because we don't have these bottlenecks."

Thanks to iOS Apple now EA's biggest retail partner | freeiosdownloads

The company generated $90 million in mobile revenue last quarter, though it didn't say how that was split between Android and iOS.

screen shot EA

For the first time ever, brick-and-mortar retailers are not the main source of Electronic Arts' revenue.
Speaking from a prepared statement Tuesday during the company's earnings call, EA COO Peter Moore said that "Apple was EA's biggest retail partner measured by sales."

Moore didn't say exactly how much EA earned from its iOS titles, but the company generated $90 million in smartphone and tablet revenue last quarter. Overall digital revenue hit $378 million, and the company's total revenue reached $495 million.

If nothing else, Moore's announcement was surprising. Electronic Arts, as one of the largest game publishers in the world, has historically relied on physical retail stores like GameStop to generate revenue. But as the company noted in its earnings call Tuesday, digital is a huge component in its business, and its iOS push seems to be paying off. EA currently offers several titles for Apple's iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.

iPhone sales to hit US$62 million in fourth quarter | freeiosdownloads

A low-cost iPhone could add as many as 12 million units to Apple's December quarter results, says Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster.
screenshot iPhone sales to hit US$62
(Credit: Apple)

iPhone sales won't heat up until the December quarter after Apple unveils a low-cost model. At least, that's the forecast from analyst Gene Munster.

For June quarter results, which Apple reports on Tuesday, Munster expects iPhone sales of 26 million, on par with Wall Street projections. If accurate, that would match the number sold during the same quarter in 2012.

For the September quarter, the analyst anticipates iPhone sales of just 24 million, lower than the 26.9 million sold over the same period last year. That estimate assumes that the widely expected iPhone 5S ships during the second to last week in September.

But the picture for Apple looks cheerier once the holiday season rolls around.

Boosted by the debut of a rumored low-cost iPhone, Apple could sell 62 million iPhones during the last calendar quarter of 2013, according to Munster. Wall Street expects just 50 million units. But that number does not assume the rollout of a low-cost version, which Munster believes could trigger 12 million unit sales on its own.

Still, that 62 million figure could be knocked down by cannibalization from the cheaper model, the analyst added in an investors note released Monday.

"We are assuming a 50 percent cannibalization factor from the cheaper phone, which may be too aggressive as we have yet to hear launch details," Munster said. "If you add back cannibalized phones, our 'core' iPhone unit estimate for Dec-13 would be 56 million or 17 percent [year-on-year] growth for the first full quarter of iPhone 5S."

For the last quarter of 2012 (Apple's first fiscal 2013 quarter), the company sold 47.8 million iPhones.

Leisure Suit Larry sleazes his way into iOS Apps | freeiosdownloads

I grew up playing Sierra On-Line's graphic adventure games: King's QuestSpace Quest, and especially Leisure Suit Larry, which to my teenage tastes offered the perfect blend of sophomoric humor and sexy-time pursuits.

screenshot of Leisure Suit Larry sleazes his way into iOS Apps
Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded for iOS looks nice, but it feels cramped on an iPhone.
(Credit: Screenshot by Rick Broida/CNET)
Proof positive that old games never die, they just get updated and ported to new platforms, Leisure Suit Larry: Reloaded debuted last month for Windows, Mac, and Linux. And now the lounge lizard's reboot has come to iOS (with an Android version imminent).

First, a little history: The new game was announced back in 2011, but got a major boost in 2012 with a successful Kickstarter campaign; around 14,000 backers pledged well over half a million dollars. It certainly helped that original series creator Al Lowe, along with several other Sierra ex-pats, were onboard to bring Reloaded to life.

However, just as Duke Nukem couldn't seem to survive the transition to the 21st century, Larry debuted on desktops to some very mixed reviews -- including a 4.0 rating from GameSpot. So how does he fare on smaller screens?

Nearly 30 App Store reviews peg this as a 5-star game, the only dissenters being those few who couldn't get it to run on certain devices. (Curiously, it's not currently compatible with any iPod Touch models.)
After playing it myself for about 30 minutes, I couldn't help feeling...underwhelmed. For starters, the game feels incredibly cramped on an iPhone; that's too small a screen to really enjoy the artwork, which is colorful and cartoonish and appropriate for the content. It's definitely better on an iPad.

Mostly, though, it reminded me how dull graphic adventures can be. I think I appreciated them more in my youth, when there were far fewer alternatives and I had enough free time to really chew through the puzzles.

Here, however, I spent a bunch of time in the first scene (a bar) looking at things, listening to endless dialogue and descriptions, and not really knowing if I was making any progress. Indeed, what were my immediate goals (other than to "find love" or at least "get lucky")? I needed a solid objective to keep my interest. Was I supposed to merely chat up the cute girl at the bar? Try for something more? Win big at the video-slots machine? After a while, I just got bored and gave up.

Of course, I had work to get done. With a little more time to spare, I'll go back to the game and see if it can rekindle my interest.

In the meantime, if you're feeling nostalgic and willing to spend $4.99 for a modernized trip down memory lane, hit the comments and let me know what you think of the new Larry.

  • Scribblenauts Remix, a Nintendo DS classic that my kids are still playing two years later, regularly $4.99.

There's plenty of good stuff here to choose from, but if I could scrounge up only a buck, I'd have to spend it on Bastion, which is just crazy-fun. But the Lego games are all great as well, and the Batman and Superman games will definitely satisfy your superhero bloodlust.
I don't know how long these prices will be in effect, so if you're looking to stock up on the cheap, don't wait. What title(s) do you think you'll grab during the sale?
